The tale of our new sushi restaurant starts with Chef Bernardo "JR" Oao, who began his culinary journey as a dishwasher at Nobu Lanai. It was here that he first crossed paths with Sushi Chef Misao Masuda. At that time, JR had no inkling that this initial role would spark a lifelong passion for sushi.
Inspired by the creativity and expertise of the chefs around him, JR's curiosity flourished. When Chef Misao offered him the chance to learn the art of sushi-making, JR eagerly embraced the opportunity. Under Misao's nurturing guidance, he cultivated a profound appreciation for the intricate craft of sushi while working at Nobu Lanai.
During countless conversations, the two playfully envisioned the possibility of opening a restaurant together—an aspiration that felt distant yet ever-present. In January 2022, Chef JR took a significant step toward that dream by launching OAO Sushi Go, a food truck in Kihei. Just months later, in November of the same year, he opened OAO Wailea, his first brick-and-mortar establishment.
Throughout this journey, Chef JR never lost sight of the shared dream he had with Chef Misao. When the opportunity to open Hachi arose, JR knew he had to invite Misao to become the Executive Sushi Chef at Hachi by OAO. Without hesitation, Misao endorsed the vision, and together, they transformed their dream into reality.
